Rangers star Steven Whittaker could miss out on Bursaspor switch after cops raid |
Bursaspor's bid to land Steven Whittaker from Rangers was on the brink of collapse last night after five of their directors were held in a swoop by Turkish cops.
Record Sport can reveal the Super Lig outfit have been plunged into crisis following yesterday's raids with the Organized Crime Bureau believed to be probing "misconduct and embezzlement".
This dramatic news emerged hours after Rangers confirmed they had booted out a third bid from the Turks, thought to be around £650,000, for Scotland full-back Whittaker.
The player's agent Ken Anderson believes his client could double his current £8,000-a-week wages by accepting a move east.
He is now demanding talks with the Ibrox hierarchy within 24 hours after learning of the latest bid from Bursa.
Anderson said: "Obviously this renewed interest from Bursa shows how highly they value the player and how keen they are to acquire Steven.
"Hopefully we can resolve things as soon as possible."
But yesterday's dramatic developments are unlikely to have impressed Whittaker who is already aware that his former Rangers team-mate Kenny Miller is desperate to quit the Turkish club - less than six months after joining them on a bumper £50,000-a-week pay packet.
Rangers boss Ally McCoist has urged new Ibrox owner Craig Whyte to tie 27-year-old Whittaker up on a new deal along with two other key men from his three-in-a-row squad, Steve Davis and Allan McGregor.
The news that Bursaspor have been rocked by a police probe, coupled with Miller's failure to settle abroad, could help Whyte convince Whittaker to pledge his future to the SPL champs
